It can be tempting to pop a pimple in hopes of getting rid of it more quickly. Is this a good idea?
An ugly, red pimple is never fun to deal with. Sometimes even the thickest makeup or concealer won’t disguise it. When confronted with this problem, some people take matters into their own hands in hopes of speeding up the healing process. Is it safe to pop a pimple? What Causes Pimples to Form in the First Place?Pimples occur when a pore becomes blocked. This prevents oil and dirt from easily escaping, setting up an inflammatory reaction and the formation of what is commonly known as a pimple. Inflamed lesions can sometimes form bigger cysts which are filled with thick pus. These are known as cystic lesions and are usually larger and more painful than the standard pimple. Some people are more prone to developing cystic pimples than others. Is It Smart to Pop a Pimple? Many people are inclined to pop a pimple in an attempt to speed up its healing. This often does more harm than good. Popping a pimple may cause it to look better in the short term, but there’s a greater risk for future problems. When a pimple is popped incorrectly, bacteria can be pushed back into the blocked pore which causes further inflammation and increases the risk of infection. The underlying inflammation not only prolongs the life of the pimple but can also lead to permanent scarring. Popping a Cystic Pimple: Is It Safe? The risk of scarring is even greater when a pimple with cystic features is popped. Cystic pimples are usually deeply seated and contain very thick, puss-like secretions that are difficult to extract even after they’re punctured. Aggressive squeezing is usually required to remove the thick secretions contained within body of the pimple which increases the risk of scarring. Bacteria are also pushed back into the clogged pore each time it’s squeezed which raises the risk of infection. Even if the cyst is successfully evacuated, there’s a good chance it will refill with secretions again. Other Alternatives to Popping a PimpleA dermatologist can inject large, painful cystic lesions with a low dose steroid solution. This decreases inflammation and allows the pimple to heal more quickly. Chances are it will look better the next day. This is far less risky and more effective than trying to do it at home. The Bottom Line?Popping a pimple is usually not a good idea, however tempting it may be. Even the worst pimples will eventually resolve on their own if given time.
