Acne is an infection of the hair follicles. As mammals, humans have hair follicles all over the skin. These pockets are open for infection by bacteria and dirt. The immune system attempts to fight off the infection, causing the area to inflame. An acne treatment is usually in the form of a pill or a topical cream. The newest cream on the market is Epiduo.

Epiduo is a topical acne treatment that is rubbed on the skin daily. Epiduo is comprised of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide. Adapalene is the active ingredient that is similar to vitamin A. Vitamin A is used by the body to help the skin rejuvenate and heal from damage. When the skin is inflamed from infection, acne treatment therapy uses vitamin A to help the skin heal and repair. Vitamin A also has a drying effect as well. The drying effect in Epiduo is used to help the skin clear up oil. When the patient’s skin dries, washing the face clears the skin from oily dirt that clogs the pores.

How to Use Epiduo to Treat Acne

Epiduo is used daily. It is only prescribed to acne sufferers who are at least 12 years of age. The gel is applied once a day, normally in the morning or at night. It’s used after the face has been washed and hands are clean. One tiny drop is placed on the finger and rubbed on the areas of the face. Some clients report a slight burning sensation when first being used, but it’s also reported that the feeling subsides after several days of use. The burning sensation is from the benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide has a mild burning sensation when it’s on the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is also a powerful agent against bacteria cells.

Advantages of Epiduo as an Acne Treatment

For several years, doctors have used antibiotics to treat acne. Because these treatments destroy bacteria cells, these acne treatments are beneficial for a while. Unfortunately, as the patient continues to use antibiotics, the cells develop resistance. The resistance can be passed to other bacteria in the body, including bacteria that are harmful and pathogenic. Antibiotic resistance is a concern in the medical community, so researchers have found benzoyl peroxide and adapalene as an alternative to treat acne. Epiduo is a part of new research for acne treatment.

Although the acne treatment is new, the medication is approved by the FDA and considered safe. Several patients have been happy with the drug, but only time will tell if it is truly the best choice for acne treatment. Its safety is backed by the FDA, so trying the drug from a licensed physician can clear acne with few side effects.
